small sighs

Yesterday marked the first day of the six weeks holiday and to celebrate I broke open a bottle of champers. No better way to mark the occasion! I have lots planned but the most important thing of all to me is having the time to enjoy the little things.

This week I have been loving:

a bargain buy from Zara

eating cream cake

a lazy breakfast in bed

drinking lots of ice cold water

We are off on a little road trip to Dorset so I will be back with you a week on Monday. I'm really looking forward to long walks on the beach, listening to the sound of the sea and seeing all the beauty Dorset has to offer.

Have a fabulous weekend lovelies.

ten top summer reads

I promised myself that this month, as part of my bucket list, I would put together a summer reading list. I'm always happy with a good book when I'm sat on the beach or in the garden enjoying some sunshine. Summer is definitely the time of year when I tend to read more as I have more time.

So here it is: I'm not sure I will get chance to read them all, but I am looking forward to trying.
This is the third book in the series of a London fashion editor who moves to France. I loved the first two books. They were perfect holiday reading, and I am sure that this will be too. It is a very true experience of life in rural France. It is guaranteed to make you laugh and cry so keep the tissues to hand.

Time to throw out all your diet books! This is a chic, classy and funny non-diet book that we have all been waiting for. It will have you laughing out loud! Learn to eat like a French woman, with your head not your stomach.

This story is on the beautiful island of Crete, an island I love, which is full of historical events. It is a 'moving and compelling about a lifetime's journey in search of the truth.' A great holiday read.

This is the first crime novel written by J. K. Rowling writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. I am really looking forward to reading this one. It is a compelling mystery set in London, from the streets of Mayfair, the East End and the lively Soho.

Italy is never far away from my thoughts, and this funny book is about three girls who meet at Italian evening classes and become good friends. Perhaps I also ought to start learning Italian, like I have always said I would. Who knows what could happen.....?

Set in the summer of 1972, which just happens to be my year of birth, a boy and his friend begin an operation to save his mother from crisis. A Sunday times best seller.

A book about a scientist with Asperger's Syndrome doesn't sound promising at first, but this has found a huge audience and sounds a little different. It is about Don Tillman who doesn't know he has Asperger's and he takes everything literally. He is looking to get married, but never gets to a second date. That is until he meets Rosie, who is nothing at all like him. She doesn't fit his idea of who he wants to marry, but this book follows the progress of their humorous adventures.

This is the stuff of summer holiday reading. Running away from the unhappy life she has made in London, Ellen Trawton goes to stay in beautiful Ireland. There she meets a a lonely man who has lost his wife in tragic circumstances. However, the past won't go away.

I'm sure lots of you have already read this; it has been massive and it is now a film. It is about a teenage girl, diagnosed with cancer who meets a young boy at a cancer support group. The book follows their relationship, and I suspect that I will have the hanky out for this one.

This is a book I have meant to read for years. Emma Bovary inhabits a romantic dream world, fueled by reading romantic novels. Her husband, a simple doctor, cannot give her the glamorous life of her dreams. Trying to make her dream world come true, Emma has lovers and debts that will ruin their lives.

Have any of you lovelies read any of these? Am I in for a treat?

Have a lovely week.

small sighs

The sun is shining, it's Friday and I'm feeling good! The weather has been lovely all week so I have tried to take advantage of this as much as I could. I am actually getting some colour which, as you know, in this country is an achievement.

We have been spending our evenings out in the garden eating, listening to music and just chilling. It has been lovely. I am looking forward to doing more of this over the holidays which start on Thursday. Fingers crossed the weather stays fine.

This week I have been loving:

an evening spent with friends

beautiful lilies from the flower market

a week of sunshine

afternoon tea for two

Have a fabulous weekend lovelies. What fun things are you up too?

how to make iced coffee

One of my favourite things to do on holiday in Greece is to sunbathe on the beach and drink iced coffees, that the best bars make so well. Now that summer has arrived I wanted a little of the holiday feeling at home, but when I searched on Google for how to make iced coffees, there was little that inspired me. Should I use espresso, ground coffee or instant; milk, evaporated milk, condensed milk or cream? So, I made up my own recipes.

To make this iced latte, which is quite large, I added three teaspoons of high quality instant coffee and 3/4 of a mug of milk to a measuring jug. Then I added two dessert spoons of condensed milk and two teaspoons of vanilla flavoured syrup. You could use sugar instead of the syrup. Whichever you choose, the sugar is what helps to create the foam that is all part of the look. Then I used a hand blender, to mix and froth it all up, for about thirty seconds or so.

I then filled the jar with ice and slowly poured in the coffee to the top. Absolutely delicious! A perfect summer drink. Once you try it, you will be hooked!

For this iced coffee I used double strength cafetiere coffee which I then chilled. I wanted these to look pretty, so I put a heaped tablespoon of condensed milk on the bottom of the glass and then added ice to the top. Over this I poured the chilled coffee and served. Before drinking, you just give a quick stir with the spoon.

Which do I prefer, well I like them both. However, contrary to what you might think, the good instant coffee perhaps had the edge and probably makes better froth for a latte. It is also faster to make when you want to get in the sun as quick as possible.

What is your favourite iced coffee/latte?

Have a great week lovelies.

small sighs

We have been blessed with some lovely weather these past few days, so I have been trying to make the most of being outside. This was how I spent one evening when I got home from work; drinking delicious pink lemonade. I find it so relaxing to be in the garden in the early evening.

This week I have been loving:

my new blouse which I got as a gift for my birthday

the breathtaking beauty of a wildflower meadow

breakfast in bed

dining alfresco with a delicious antipasti board and Pimms

Have a great weekend lovelies. We are hoping to go to a music festival so fingers crossed for good weather.

bringing style into bloom

At the weekend we took a little trip to explore the lovely Weston Park which just happens to be the first park in Sheffield. It wasn't a very warm day so I thought this floral blouse was perfect with its long sleeves.

It was a blouse I had seen in River Island but didn't buy. I didn't mention I had seen it to Steve but he must know me very well as there it was all nicely wrapped up as part of my birthday present.

It has a great versatility to it; perfect for all the seasons. I chose to wear it today with jeans I got for my birthday and my old faithful brogues.

I apologise for the frizzy hair! Damp air never does it much good!

On a lovely day this would be a perfect place to sit and while away an afternoon with a picnic. Even though it was cold, there were lots of people walking round with ice creams like it was the done thing to do.

You can get married in the bandstand and I can definitely see the appeal. It has a real vintage feel and with good weather it would be magical.

The park has been restored beautifully with gorgeous planting, quiet seating areas and a museum to wander around that is very hands on for children. Definitely a place I want to visit again when it is a bit warmer!

Enjoy the rest of your week lovelies.

What I wore:

River Island Boyfriend Jeans
